Backlinks are one of the most important aspects to ranking well in search results with Google and other search engines. They must be high-quality backlinks, however. What are backlinks? A backlink is simply a link from a page on someone else’s website which links to a page on your website – perhaps to a particularly interesting blog post or article that you have on there, or just a link to your homepage. These kinds of links, according to the search engines, give your site “authority” as it proves you have relevant and interesting content and that your site is important. This improves your rankings in the SERP (Search Engine Results Pages) immensely. Your site and the other site linking to you must of course be on the same subject matter, and the site linking back to you also has to be a high-quality site and have authority itself. To give you an example of what high-quality backlinks would look like, if you are a plumber, you might have links from a major directory such as Yell, a plumbing supplier, a review site, a local trades directory and an online publication which has written a relevant article to your business.
